This vessel was thrown on the potter’s wheel and altered when wet.. It was trimmed after drying about halfway. After completely dry, it was bisque fired. After bisque firing, it was glazed with new proprietary glazes and raku fired.

Making Raku Pottery

Most of the raku vessels that I make are thrown on the wheel. Some are altered, some are not. I have developed all of my raku glaze recipes, which to me, makes the work more personal. The glazes are then sprayed, poured and/or painted on the pieces.

The colors of the glaze and the crackle are dependent on the amount of oxygen I allow during the raku firing and cooling. As oxygen is reduced, the reaction causes the oxygen to be pulled from the glazes, leaving behind a brilliant mix of beautifully colored raku pottery. The results are always serendipitous and each raku pottery piece or sculpture I pull from the container is truly one of a kind!
