Space Rock Cobalt Ovoid

8"H x 11"W

One of my favorite raku pottery pieces!

This piece was crafted using the American raku process and was first created on the potter’s wheel before being firing in the kiln. After it was fired, I applied various proprietary glazes and underglazes. These are poured, sprayed and painted prior to being raku fired.

Raku Pottery Firing

These unique glazes enhance the underlying design and texture of the pottery piece. Once the glazes are applied, I fire the pottery piece in a metal compartment and use newspaper as my combustible.   I can then contain the fire by covering the the compartment and thus smothering the flames. This creates a reduction chamber that is rich in carbon. By containing the fire and am able to create the desired effects by placing a lid on the reduction chamber, smothering the flames and creating a carbon-rich environment.  As oxygen is reduced, the reaction causes the oxygen to be pulled from the glazes, leaving behind a brilliant mix of beautifully colored raku pottery. To me, the serendipity of this process is very exciting!
