This extraordinary raku pottery vase makes a wonderful gift and is a sure conversation starter. It was first thrown on the potter’s wheel before being altered and fired in the bisque kiln. The rippled textures and heavy blues and greens were created using proprietary glaze recipes which are sprayed, poured and/or painted on. The piece is then fired using the raku firing process.
The metallics that I most often use in the glazes are copper, silver, cobalt and chrome. They melt in the firing and leave some spectacular results. I may also use the glazes to enhance the underlying design or texture of the piece. The colors of the glaze and the crackle are dependent on the amount of reduction allowed during the raku firing and cooling.
